Background:
The Man O’ War Robusto is a noteworthy cigar for many reasons. The name alone is enough to make you think about pulling it from the humidor. Touted as a full bodied cigar with medium-full strength, it will hit you with a bit of spice and a creamy puff of white smoke right off the bat.
Letting it settle in a bit, the cigar begins to mellow as it enters the first 1/3. A great looking cigar with solid construction, the burn maintains a nice line and stays even as we progress. It is a nice mixture of complexity and balance in that it doesn’t overpower you with any one sensation, but it’s not boring either. A bit of the earthy, cocoa tones are kept at bay by just the edge of spiciness lingering on the finish.
Moving past the half-way point, the draw is great and a crisp tobacco taste is working its way into the cigar. As much as I’m enjoying the taste of this cigar, I may be enjoying the aroma even more. It has that strong, classic cigar smell we love all love. The burn had wandered just a bit, but self corrected as I got to the final third.
As I am nearing the nub, the spice is starting to become dominant. It’s not overpowering, but the stick loses the balance it maintained up to this point. It leaves a bit of a nip on the tongue as it may be getting a bit hot at this point, and a few more puffs leave me with a lasting bit of leather and spice. The growing warmth on my finger tips lets me know this cigar has reached the end, and I leave the Man O’ War behind to extinguish itself
The final impressions are of a nicely balanced cigar that gives you a bit of spice and flawless construction with a little bit of kick. For a cigar in the $5 – $6 price range, you will get your moneys worth.
